Dental Appliance Therapy

At Arkona Dental we employ custom fitted dental appliances to help with a variety of reasons.  By taking a quick impression of your teeth we can provide a precisely fitted appliance that will help protect your teeth and improve your quality of life. Dental appliances we typically prescribe are:

Bruxing Appliances (Night guards):Night guards may be recommended for patients who are clenching and grinding their teeth. Teeth grinding, also known as Bruxism, can lead to cracked or broken teeth, headaches, and a stiff or a sore jaw. The first step in handling bruxism is awareness. Understanding the source of this pain is important for both you and your dentist. Drs. McCallum and Lovell may recommend a night guard to help relieve symptoms. A night guard helps by propping open your bite and protecting your teeth from direct wear. Any grinding will wear down the appliance instead of your teeth. It may also help relax your muscles, which may help with stiffness and headaches.

Sport guards:Whatever your sport may be, we can help protect your smile with a custom fitted Pro-Form Sports Guard. Compared to the standard one-size-fits-all, “boil and bite” mouth guards sold in sporting goods stores, these mouth guards:

  • have much more consistent thickness of material throughout the guard
  • fit snugly, so they won’t pop out when you open your mouth
  • won’t impede your breathing or speaking

Snore guards:Positioning of the head and neck greatly affect snoring potential. When you lay on your back, you are more prone to snoring than when laying on your side or stomach. To treat snoring Drs. McCallum and Lovell will fit you with a custom mouth guard that helps keep your airway open by gently positioning your lower jaw forward.  Being fitted for a snore guard will allow you to breathe easy during sleep and enjoy a restful night.
