Crowns and Bridges

Our goal is to restore each tooth to its optimal health.  Crowns are used for both restorative and cosmetic dentistry. Crowns can help enhance the visual appearance of discoloured, cracked or otherwise traumatized teeth. They are also used to rebuild teeth that have suffered decay, breaks, root canals, or other issues that have caused them to lose strength.

A crown is a type of dental restoration intended to cover the entire tooth. Cemented onto your natural tooth, which acts as a core, a crown effectively serves as your tooth’s new surface because it completely covers your natural tooth.

Crowns can be fabricated from a variety of materials including ceramic, porcelain, gold alloy or even a combination of both. Drs McCallum and Lovell can provide you with additional information on your crown options, including which type of material would work best for your crown.

Bridges are named for the way they “bridge” the gaps between teeth lost to trauma or decay. Bridges can replace missing teeth by placing artificial teeth where your natural teeth are missing, restoring your smile’s health and aesthetics. The tooth on either side of the space is prepared to support an abutment crown (bridge anchor) and the missing tooth is replaced with a tooth pontic (attached to both anchors).

Crown and Bridge procedures requires two appointments, one for preparation and temporization and a second for cementation. Bridges are fabricated out of the same materials as the above mentioned crowns, including ceramic, gold alloys, or a combination of both.
